Abolitionist Dreaming

We continue to dream about alternatives to authoritarian and carceral thinking. The status quo can sometimes feel inescapable, but we have to come together and imagine alternative visions of solidarity, accountability, justice, and governance. Another world is possible, and we are going to keep working and fighting for it! We hope this month's newsletter inspires you in some small way:

Planting Justice team members just got back from a trip to New Orleans where they met with artist Jackie Sumell and the team at The Solitary Gardens (@solitarygardens). The Solitary Gardens is an inspirational art project in New Orleans, LA inspired by Jackie's collaboration with political prisoner Herman Wallace. From their website:

"The Solitary Gardens, turns solitary confinement cells into garden beds that are the same size and blue-print as the cell Herman, and so many others spend decades in. The contents (plants, flowers and herbs) of the prison-cell-turned-garden-bed are designed by prisoners serving their sentences in isolation through proxies on the outside. Central to this project is a call to end the inhumane conditions of solitary confinement, simultaneously inspiring compassion necessary to dismantle systems of punishment and control.

PJ staff also had the opportunity to learn from Cedar in the Abolitionist Apothecary (check out her work at The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts right now!), and talk about their newest project honoring the legacy of Louisiana’s incarcerated abolitionists who have mapped a future toward Abolition and Beyond! Learn more about the Abolitionist Apothecary, and their work to reimagine our relationship to wellness and what healing means and looks like here.

As Planting Justice expands and develops in 2025 and beyond, we are hoping to strengthen our work in creative partnerships with incredible projects like Solitary Gardens and the Abolitionist Apothecary. Thank you for having us and generously sharing about what’s possible when art, plants and abolitionists dream through prison walls for 20 years!

Winter Pruning Workshops

Our recent Winter Pruning Workshop series, led by Mother Farm Co-Manager Julio Madrigal, focused on the tools, skills, and techniques for successful winter pruning–a must for fuller fruit production later in the year. Have you pruned your fruit trees?

These and future workshops are free (donations appreciated!) and are a great way to grow community among fruit growers in the Bay Area. Are there aspects about orchard care you’d like us to host workshops on? Let Julio know at: julio@plantingjustice.org

The PJ Mother Farm Team is beginning our journey to adding chickens into our ecosystem, and we're excited to invite everyone to come learn along with us!

Community members are invited to the PJ Mother Farm 12 noon - 2 PM, Saturday, March 15 for a community conversation about getting started with chicken and poultry husbandry!

Come hear resources and tips recommended from folks at different stages in their chicken-keeping journey over light snacks and refreshments. Feel free to bring some tasty treats!

Some quick updates from the nursery:

  • We Hired 4 New Nursery Techs! (Clockwise from left: Iris, Mohini, Michele, Larkey)

  • The Nursery Staff had an in-depth irrigation training - all staff were able to get a better understanding of irrigation systems and best practices.

  • We finally received our shade structure!  The front of the nursery will soon be covered, and the plants will be thrilled.

Planting Justice Anniversaries

Several staff members are celebrating their work anniversaries! So grateful for these folks doing the work and being part of this vision. Here's  to many more!

Cesar: 7 Years!

Yenni: 7 Years!

Covonne: 4 Years!

We got lucky with a beautiful day between the rains this month when we took a group of students on a field trip to the PJ Mother Farm! They were able to really get their hands in the dirt because we were planting lavender bushes. We talked about composting, planting techniques, pruning, and they got to see lots of pollinators in action! Also, we harvested fresh herbs that we will be making into an infused oil. We will then take that oil and use it in our salve-making class. Lots of medicine-making fun in store for this group!

We have also successfully recruited 8 interns at one of our school sites for the culinary and gardening program! The program begins with our 3-week Food Hander's Course so students can get food handling certified.

Our Smoothie internship program where we make fresh smoothies and hand out at schools and around the community is starting next week, and hopefully we will be back at Fruitvale giving free smoothies to the community again soon so stay tuned for updates!
