Summer Abundance

Soap Plant

Amidst the blossoming abundance of early summer, one plant we are especially appreciating (in addition to kale) is soap plant. Native to most of California, this agave relative is drought deciduous, which means it survives drought by shedding all its leaves. Most years, its foliage does not last long!

In these challenging and uncertain times, we are thinking about how we can be like the soap plant, temporarily shedding what isn't needed in order to sustain ourselves and keep showing up for our community.

What plants have you noticed around you? What lessons do they have to teach? We'd love to hear from you!

In This Newsletter:
- Updates from Ed. Team, Reentry, Mother Farm, and our Oakland Nursery
- Plant of the Month & So Much More...!

With the school year wrapping up and summer fast approaching, we
are reflecting on our successes.

This school year, we successfully supported 25 students in completing their ServSafe food handlers course and receiving their food handlers certificate!

With this certification, students were able to participate in hands-on cooking classes in which they prepared meals to feed their community! Through growing and preparing food together, youth deepened their connection to community care, nourishment, and food justice.

And though school might be out for most of us, the Education Team is just getting started!

Planting Justice's Food Sovereignty Youth Leadership Summer Internship kicks off June 20th, and we’re gearing up for six incredible weeks of cooking, gardening, and connecting with the land through community, art, and food. 🌱🍽️

This is the busiest time of year at the nursery! From April - September, as the plants grow and blossom, so do our orders! In addition to all the other work we do, PJ nursery staff are busy 6 days a week fulfilling and shipping plant orders. Thank you for your support!

Highlights

  • In preparation for the busy season, we are happy to announce we have received a large order of over 1,000 plants! Shop the Collection!

  • Nursery staff did some in-depth learning about apple trees and their fruiting flowers!

  • We held an Herbalism Lunch and Learn for our nursery staff, providing hands-on tincture, tea bag, and poultice making! We also made some community art inspired by our plant relatives!

Finally, we are in the process of upgrading our irrigation system and installing it on our newly renovated nursery and shade structure, while also preparing to rearrange the Nursery in a way to better serve our plants, customers and employees!

Keep an eye on our website for info about an upcoming massive volunteer day / community party! Date TBD.

Our Reentry Program is working on so much, including hand-printing some exciting new merch inspired (and some maybe even fully designed) by PJ staff. We hope to have our own Planting Justice print shop operational soon!

Quest for Democracy

On May 19th, some PJ Staff and friends (shout out to Troy and Trancita!) made the annual trip to support Quest for Democracy, the largest formerly incarcerated day of action in the country!

If you don't know, Q4D gathers dozens of organizations, and hundreds of activists for a day of political action in Sacramento. As always, we were honored to be a small part of this event, and support grassroots political action and community building.

As the organizers describe it: "We facilitate direct access to State Legislators and provide close engagement with the democratic process for hundreds of community members, nonprofit organizations, and formerly incarcerated individuals. We speak to the devastating realities of the criminal legal system and challenge assumptions of incarceration and rehabilitation."

Fruit is Fruiting!

While the PJ Mother Farm’s real “crop” is the propagation material for our nursery (the scions and cuttings from the 1,100 varieties of organic fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, and fruiting vines planted in pairs),those plants also grow a wonderful bonus crop of fruit!

Currently, we see ripening early cherry, early peach, late loquat, and mulberry. With so many varieties growing on the farm, we have an extended fruiting season as early, mid, and late varieties ripen throughout the summer. Wonderful to enjoy months of mulberry (stained purple fingers and all) instead of just weeks!

Keep an eye out for upcoming fruit tasting events at the Mother Farm, where we’ll show you how we grow and care for specific varieties, share the fruit and value-added products from them (jams, baked goods, and drinks), and enjoy them together in community. We hope to have 4-5 fruit tasting events between June and November, highlighting all the fruit you can grow in the Bay Area, from apples to sapote and everything in between (there's a lot in between). Hope to see you there!

Capital Campaign Extended!

We so appreciate your support!

Thanks to this amazing community, we have raised $1.6M ( 80% of our original $2M goal)!

Although that is amazing, we want to ensure that we can successfully complete this project, so we are not giving up on that original goal!

In order to raise the final $400k, we are extending our 2025 Capital Campaign to the end of June.

Help us spread the word, and contribute if you can!

If everyone reading this newsletter donated $25, we would hit our goal today!

Our Plant of the Month: Elderberries!

An easy to grow great multipurpose bush for the edible landscape.

Large upright vigorous bushes possess a magical charm and attractive foliage. Dark blue/black fruits and large lacy creamy white flowers are very healthful and used medicinally for colds and fevers. Fruits also make rich and wild flavored jams, wine, syrups and pies. Flowers can be used to make Elderberry fritters or other delicious treats!

Plants bloom and fruit abundantly over a long season. Works great in hedgerows or as a companion plant, as it has been shown to have a variety of ecological benefits.

Grows 6-8 ft. tall. American varieties are best pollinated by other American varieties; European by other European varieties.
